John W. Dobbs

John Wesley Dobbs was one of the most influential African American leaders in Atlanta during the mid-20th century. Born in 1882 in Kennesaw, Georgia, he rose from humble beginnings to become a powerful voice for civil rights and political participation.

Dobbs earned the honorary title 'Mayor of Auburn Avenue' for his tireless work in the Sweet Auburn community, which he helped transform into a thriving center of Black business and culture. He was a founding member of the Atlanta Civic and Political League and registered over 10,000 African American voters in Georgia.
