Geneva Haugabrooks

Geneva Moton Haugabrooks moved to Atlanta to go to Spelman College. She worked as a teacher at a school in Fayette County before entering the business world.

​

In 1929, she started her own funeral home with less than $300, becoming the first and only Black female to open a funeral home in Atlanta at the time.

​

Nicknamed "Mama Haugabrooks," she was an important figure in the Atlanta community. She won awards for outstanding service in the community and worked with many groups such as the YMCA and the Urban League.

​

She used her education to become a teacher and then a pioneering business owner, being an inspiration to others. She loved helping others and played a major role in supporting her community.
