Dinah Watts Pace

Dinah Watts Pace was born into slavery before the Civil War and gained freedom at 12 years old. She moved to Atlanta after becoming free and studied at Atlanta University to become a teacher.

In 1883, she opened a school for African-American children. The following year, she started an orphanage for African-American children and raised money to give the children a better life.

Pace opened her own school and orphanage for African-American children in Covington, GA. There is a park and a road named after her in Covington to honor her impact on the community.
